Grand mansion parvenus . . .
On the lifestyles of the newly rich merchant class --
Grand mansion parvenus
have summoned by horse
a town doctor.
More literally:
A town doctor summoned
by horse from people that live
in a grand mansion.
Translation: 白ç‹
[Matsuo Bashô #54 -- 1675 at Edo (Tôkyô).]
machà ishà ya / yashÃki-gà ta yóri / komá mukáe(-te).
"town doctor -- // mansion-people from // horse sent-for/summoned."
gata > honorific pluralizing suffix, used only for people !!
therefore NOT > "grand mansion" sends for a town doctor,
it's > the rich people that live in that mansion etc.
And I presume the honorific part was meant sarcasticly !!
Jane Reichhold translated "machi ishi" into "village quack",
which is absurd !! > "machi" = not "village" [sato/ mura],
it's "town/ city-district/ block/ street".
