Bhadda's yellow robe.

Bhadda Kundalakesa: The Former Jain Ascetic:

With cut hair, mud on skin, in a cloth of bark
-- I had roamed around before,
finding fault in faultlessness and seeing
-- perfection in what's imperfect.

After my doings by day I went out to Vulture-on-Peak Mountains
and saw the shining Buddha revered by a community of Bikkhus.

Doing pañjali humbly on my knees before Him I paid homage,
"Come, Bhadda !!", He said to me: this (was) my admittance.

As I roamed in Anga and Magadha, in Vajji, Kasi and Kosala
debtlessly for fifty years, I was blessed with people's generosity.

Great merit the wise man has indeed gained, this lay-devotee,
who had given a yellow robe to Bhadda, a free one from all ties.

107. Luna-kesi paṅka-dharī vakasāṭī pure cariṃ,
Avajje vajja-matinī vajje cāvajja-dassinī.

108. Divā-vihārā nikkhamma gijjha-kūṭamhi pabbate
Addasaṃ virajaṃ buddhaṃ bhikku-saṅgha-purakkhataṃ.

109. Nihacca jāṇuṃ vanditvā sammukhā pañjaliṃ akaṃ,
Ehi bhaddeti maṃ avaca sā me ās-ūpa-sampadā.

110. Ciṇṇā aṅgā ca magadhā vajjī kāsī ca kosalā,
Anaṇā paṇṇāsa-vassāni raṭṭha-piṇḍa-m-abhañjihaṃ.

111. Puññaṃ vata pasavi bahuṃ sappañño vatāyaṃ upāsako,
Yo bhaddāya cīvaraṃ adāsi vippa-muttāya sabba-ganthehīti.

dhāreti : [dhar + e] bears; holds; wears.
vaka : [m.] a wolf. // vāka : [nt.] strips of bark (used for making garments).
vakkala : [nt.] a garment made of bark; the strips taken for that purpose.
vakkalī : [adj.] wearing a bark garment.
pure: [adv.] before; formerly; earlier.
ca = and, then, now. > ca+avajja > cā-

carati = walks/roams about / cariṃ [aor.]
> here the aorist functions as a pluperfect, since there is none in Pali !!
> "had roamed around before" [aoristus pro plusquamperfecto]

Divā-vihārā nikkhamma gijjha-kūṭamhi pabbate
Addasaṃ virajaṃ buddhaṃ bhikku-saṅgha-purakkhataṃ.

"by-day-mode-of-life-from having-gone-out to Vulture-on-Peak Mountains //
I-saw shining Buddha revered by Community of Bikkhus"

diva = day / divā = days, by day [abl.]
vihāra : [m.] an abode; a dwelling place; mode of life; passing the time.
nikkhamma : [abs. of nikkhamati] having gone out;
having gone forth from; [also > having left the household life.
> but she had done that already as a Jain ascetic]
vulture : [m.] gijjha. // peak : [nt.] kūṭa. // pabbata : [m.] mountain.
-- addasaṃ see below -- bhikku- = monk
saá¹…gha- = order, community (of Buddhist monks) >
saá¹…gha : [m.] a multitude; an assemblage; the Buddhist clergy.
saá¹…ghagata : [adj.] gone into or given to the community.
union : [f.] sāmaggi; saṅgati. [m.] saṅgama. // unites : [pr.t.] saṅgameti;
saṅgaṇikā : [f.] society. // saṅga : [m.] attachment; clinging.
purakkhata : [pp. of purakkharoti] put in front; honoured; esteemed.

addasaṃ : [pret. of dakkhati] I/he saw >> have/has seen
[praeteritum=perfectum] It should be in aorist too, but even in English
a pluperfect wouldn't feel right !! I also changed the absolutive
[=participle clause] nikkhamma into a first main clause verb
turning the original first main clause into a consequium (... and ...).
The second consequium is akaṃ, the third is avaca,
the fourth abhañjihaṃ.
First main clause verb cariṃ > had roamed about [aor.pr.pl.pf]
. . . has accumulated/gained [pure aorist] pasavi
. . . had given > [aor.pr.pl.pf] adāsi.

pabbate is a plural !!

stainless : [adj.] akalaá¹…ka; nimmala; vimala.
virājati : [vi + raj + a] shines; is bright.
virājamāna : [pr.p. of virājati] shining.

Nihacca jāṇuṃ vanditvā sammukhā pañjaliṃ akaṃ,
Ehi bhaddeti maṃ avaca sā me ās-ūpa-sampadā.

nīca : [adj.] low; humble; inferior. // knee : [m.] jāṇu; jaṇṇu
vanditvā : [abs. of vandati] having saluted; paid homage; having honoured; having adored.
sammukha : [adj.] face to face with. [loc.] in the presence.
sammukhā : in front; face to face.
pañjali: [adj.] holding up the clasped hands as token of salutation.
akaṃ = I did // ehi = come!! // maṃ (acc.) avaca = to-me (dat.) said
sā = this/she // sā = [m.] dog
me = gen.(>my)/dat.(mama) + acc. (maṃ) + instr. (mayā)
asati : [as + a] eats // āsati [ās + a] : sits + ūpa : under/near-to +
sampadā : [f.] fortune; happiness; success; attainment.

sampādeti : [saṃ + pad + e] tries to accomplish; supplies.
sampatta : [pp. of sampāpuṇāti] reached; arrived; come to; attained.

Ciṇṇā aṅgā ca magadhā vajjī kāsī ca kosalā,

but alms are given out of pity and compassion and that may be true
for christians but not for buddhists !!

Puññaṃ vata pasavi bahuṃ sappañño vatāyaṃ upāsako,
Yo bhaddāya cīvaraṃ adāsi vippa-muttāya sabba-ganthehīti.

"merit indeed has-he-brought-forth great [-uṃ conforms with puññaṃ]
wise-man indeed this lay-devotee // who bhadda-to yellow-robe gave
to-a-freed-one from-all-ties."

puñña : [nt.] merit; righteousness. // bahuṃ (great?)
vata: surely; certainly; indeed; alas. [nt.] a religious duty or observance.
pasavi : [aor. of pasavati] brought forth; gave birth to; flowed; accumulated.
sappañño > sappañña : [adj.] wise. [Lt.] sapere, sapiens
vatāyaṃ > vata-ayaṃ = indeed + this
upāsaka : [m.] a lay devotee; one who comes near.
cīvara : [nt.] the yellow robe (of a Buddhist monk).
adāsi = [aor.] he/she gave > had given [aor.pr.pl.pf.]

pasavi is an aorist not an optative !! > "great merit the wise man,
this lay-devotee, has indeed accrued in the course of 50 years."

Bhadda looks back and gives thanks to whomever it was who long ago [had given] her a robe when she set out in the homeless life [of a bikkhu in stead of a Jain-ascetic]:

I traveled before in a single cloth,
With shaven head, covered in dust,
Thinking of faults in the faultless,
While in the faulty seeing no faults.

When done was the day's abiding,
I went to Mount Vulture Peak
And saw the stainless Buddha
Revered by the Order of Bhikkhus.

Then before Him my hands in [p]añjali
Humbly, I bowed down on my knees.
"Come, Bhadda," He said to me:
And thus was I ordained.

Debt-free, I traveled for fifty years
In Anga, Magadha and Vajji,
In Kasi and Kosala, too,
Living on the alms of the land.

That lay-supporter — wise man indeed —
May many merits accrue to him!
Who gave a robe to Bhadda for
Free of all ties is she.
